French
Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at St. Sebastian’s
At St. Sebastian’s Church of England Primary School and Nursery, we believe learning a language opens doors to new cultures and experiences. Our MFL curriculum focuses on French for pupils in Years 3–6, with weekly lessons designed to build vocabulary, grammar, and confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Our Vision:
We aim to develop language skills progressively while fostering cultural awareness by exploring different countries and traditions.
How We Teach:
- Weekly French lessons based on Sue Cave’s scheme of work.
- Interactive, engaging activities supported by audio resources and storybooks.
- Lessons tailored to support all abilities and challenge the more able.
- Opportunities for consolidation and extension, including support from a native French speaker in Year 6.
Assessing Progress:
Children’s progress is tracked through formative assessments, workbooks, and self-assessment tools. Feedback is given regularly, and achievements are recorded to ensure smooth transition to secondary school.
Linked Policies:
Our approach aligns with the school’s Teaching and Learning, SEND, Assessment, and Feedback policies.
