Art at St. Sebastian’s Church of England Primary School

At St. Sebastian’s, we believe art is a powerful way for children to express themselves and develop creativity. Our curriculum gives pupils the chance to explore a wide range of media and techniques, often inspired by famous artists and artistic genres. Every child has their own sketchbook to record ideas, practice skills, and reflect on their progress.

Art is taught in every year group, with one unit per term following the Kapow scheme of work. Pupils learn key skills in drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, and digital art, while building knowledge in line with the National Curriculum. Each year, children study at least one renowned artist and use subject-specific vocabulary to discuss both their own work and significant artworks.

We encourage cross-curricular links and provide opportunities to visit galleries—locally, further afield, or online. Assessment is ongoing through discussion, feedback, and teacher judgments, ensuring every child is supported and celebrated.

Our aim is to nurture confident, enthusiastic young artists who appreciate the art around them and develop their own creative voice. Achievements are showcased in classrooms and corridors, helping us inspire the next generation of artists.
