History

History at St. Sebastian’s C of E Primary School

Our history curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and help children understand the past in meaningful ways. We aim for pupils to develop strong chronological knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the ability to draw conclusions from evidence. Empathy and an appreciation of diversity are central to our approach.

What We Teach:

  • A carefully sequenced curriculum based on the National Curriculum, taught in chronological order.
  • Key concepts, vocabulary, and knowledge organisers to support learning and memory.
  • Opportunities to make links between historical periods and our local community.

How We Teach:

  • Weekly lessons (30–45 mins in KS1, 45–60 mins in KS2).
  • Practical resources, topic books, and enrichment activities such as visits to museums and local historical sites.
  • Celebrating diversity, including events like Black History Month.

Assessment & Impact:

  • Ongoing assessment through quizzes, discussions, and key questions.
  • Progress tracked using milestones for historical skills and knowledge.
  • Regular monitoring by our subject leader to ensure high standards.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):
Children explore “Understanding the World – Past and Present,” learning about people’s lives, similarities and differences over time, and historical stories through books and storytelling.
