Design & Technology at St. Sebastian’s

Our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum inspires creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills. Children learn to design, make, and evaluate products with purpose and enjoyment. They explore how things work, develop ideas through drawing and modeling, and use tools safely.

What We Aim For:

  • Encourage imaginative thinking and teamwork.
  • Teach children to plan, create, and evaluate their designs.
  • Develop practical skills with tools, materials, and components.
  • Introduce principles of nutrition and cooking.

How We Teach DT:

  • Lessons follow the National Curriculum using “Projects on a Page” for progression across year groups.
  • Activities include research, planning, making, and evaluating.
  • Children work individually and in groups, using a wide range of tools and techniques.
  • EYFS pupils learn through play and exploration, experimenting with materials and design.

Key Skills by Stage:

  • Key Stage 1: Communicate ideas through drawings and models, build simple structures, and explore mechanisms.
  • Key Stage 2: Use research to inform designs, apply technical knowledge, and incorporate mechanical and electrical systems.

Assessment & Safety: Work is assessed through observation, discussion, and product outcomes. Health and safety is a priority, with risk assessments for practical tasks.
