Science

Science at St. Sebastian’s Church of England Primary School and Nursery

Our Science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity and help children understand the world around them. We aim for pupils to see how science impacts life today and in the future. Through engaging lessons, children explore living things, materials, and natural phenomena, while learning about influential scientists and their contributions.

How We Teach Science

  • Curriculum Design: Follows the National Curriculum, with a clear progression of knowledge and skills across year groups.
  • Practical Learning: Pupils plan investigations, use scientific equipment, and report findings in varied ways.
  • Knowledge Organisers: Each unit includes key questions, vocabulary, and links to famous scientists, shared with families to support home learning.
  • Working Scientifically: Children develop enquiry skills, ask questions, and use research to find answers.

Enrichment Opportunities We enhance learning through outdoor activities, workshops, museum visits, local walks, and competitions.

Assessment and Monitoring Progress is tracked through formative assessments, quizzes, and end-of-unit reviews. Feedback is guided by the school’s policy, and data is monitored termly.

Early Years In EYFS, science focuses on “Understanding the World,” helping children make sense of their environment and community.
