Geography

Geography at St. Sebastian’s C of E Primary School

Our Geography curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and help children understand and care for the world around them. Starting with their immediate environment, pupils gradually explore the local area, the UK, Europe, and the wider world. Learning is hands-on, with practical experiences and fieldwork wherever possible.

What We Teach:

  • Early Years (EYFS): Children learn about their surroundings through stories, observation, and simple fieldwork, building early geographical language and skills.
  • Key Stages 1 & 2: Pupils develop map skills, use atlases and digital tools, learn compass directions, and progress to grid references, latitude, and longitude. They study physical and human geography, including rivers, mountains, sustainability, and meteorology.

How We Teach:

  • Lessons follow the National Curriculum and are carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time.
  • Knowledge organisers and key vocabulary support learning and memory.
  • Cross-curricular links and enrichment opportunities, such as local field trips and museum visits, make geography engaging and relevant.

Assessment & Impact:

  • Progress is monitored through quizzes, discussions, and practical activities.
  • Feedback is given promptly, and achievements are tracked to ensure every child makes progress.

Our aim is for children to leave St. Sebastian’s with strong geographical knowledge, practical skills, and an appreciation of the world and its communities.
